The world largest brewer is prepared to spend Rs 150 crore (USD 21 million) over that time span to design and build the microbreweries within 5-star luxury Taj Hotels across key locations in India.
Taj Hotels runs 84 hotels across India and 16 in other countries around the world, including USA, UK, South Africa and the UAE. It is a subsidiary of IHCL which itself is part of the Tata Group, one of India's largest business conglomerates. Under this partnership AB InBev will manage the brewing business while IHCL will run the outlets. "We will leverage our collective strength to shape the beer category in India. While Taj will bring hospitality excellence and beautiful locations, we have a vast portfolio of craft brands globally and together, that can elevate the country's brew pub experience," Ben Verhaert, President India South Asia, AB InBev told Economic Times India. „The agreement is to open 15 microbreweries within the next 5 years and this will basically allow us to ensure a presence in all major cities of India. The first step of us is to open the first microbrewery in the first half of next year in Bangalore. That’s the first step in our partnership,” Ben Verhaert added in an interview with CNBC. The brewery hopes to open 4 breweries by the end of 2021, according to the manager. "With its diverse collection of over 500 beer brands, AB InBev will be involved in setting up on-site microbreweries at some of our iconic hotels; the first of which will be at Taj MG Road, Bengaluru, followed by Goa, Mumbai and Hyderabad," said Puneet Chhatwal, managing director and chief executive officer of IHCL. AB InBev will not brew its existing beer brands, such as Budweiser, Hoegarden and Corona at the premises but rather new beer styles that are relevant to the Indian customers. Names and beer styles are not decided yet. The announcement came only a few days after AB InBev’s successful second attempt for an IPO of its Asian business unit at Hong Kong’s stock exchange. The world's largest "Volksfest" welcomed approximately 6.3 million guests from all over the world - to put that number into perspective, 6.3 million people roughly equate to 3 quarters of the population of Germany's neighboring state, Austria. Wow.
Naturally, the amount of Oktoberfestbier that was sold in the two weeks the Oktoberfest was held in, was equally astounding: 7.3 million litres, which is about 2 million gallons. All that beer must have made visitors rather hungry, as over 124 oxen and 29 calves were consumed. In comparison to last year's Oktoberfest, the amount of criminal offenses lessened in 2019. 914 of such incidents were recorded by Munich's policemen, which is around one percent less than in 2018. The number of intoxications lessened, too - the Aicher Ambulanz Union reported around 600 cases of alcoholic intoxications, 120 less than in 2018. But not all is fine and dandy about the Oktoberfest, as inside.beer reports. A lot about it could change fundamentally if a local court follows the ideas of a Bavarian beer tent operator. Walter Hödl, who operated for 19 years a beer tent at the local beer festival in Bad Füssing, Bavaria, sued the Munich breweries because of "accessory to repeated, deliberate and continuing fraud". sticky cans to avoid plastic?
In an effort to move away from plastic six-pack rings, Corona is currently designing cans that can be screwed one into another vertically to form a long, pole-like multi-pack. Customers could screw up to 10 cans into another, which makes a pole about four-feet (1.20 m) tall. While that does not sound really comfortable, still if you screw up to 6 cans together it could be a viable solution that may help to avoid unnecessary plastic vaste. Here is a little preview of how that could like: https://vimeo.com/336137535
The Brewers Association (BA) - the trade association representing small and independent American craft brewers - yesterday released annual growth figures for the U.S. craft brewing industry.
In 2018, small and independent brewers collectively produced 25.9 million barrels and realized 4 percent total growth, increasing craft’s overall beer market share by volume to 13.2 percent. Retail dollar value was estimated at $27.6 billion, representing 24.1 percent market share and 7 percent growth over 2017. Growth for small and independent brewers occurred in an overall down beer market, which dropped 1 percent by volume in 2018. The 50 fastest growing breweries delivered 10 percent of craft brewer growth. Craft brewers provided more than 150,000 jobs, an increase of 11 percent over 2017. “Craft maintained a fairly stable growth rate in 2018 and continued to gain share in the beer market,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “Small and independent brewers continue to serve as job creators, strong economic contributors, and community beacons.” There were 7,346 craft breweries operating in 2018, including 4,521 microbreweries, 2,594 brewpubs, and 231 regional craft breweries. Throughout the year, there were 1,049 new brewery openings and 219 closings—a closing rate of 3 percent. “The beer landscape is facing new realities with category competition, societal shifts, and other variables in play. There are still pockets of opportunity both in terms of geography and business model, but brewers need to be vigilant about quality, differentiation, and customer service,” added Watson.
